Apple acquired a color grading tool made by a single developer.

In a January filing spotted by MacRumors, Apple disclosed its purchase of Color.io — a grading tool used by filmmakers and photographers — and the hiring of its sole developer. Color.io shut down last year after its creator, Jonathan Ochmann, said he’s “been offered an opportunity to work alongside a company whose products have shaped and inspired me.”

Molo is not doing especially impressive lawyering here.

It’s funny that he’s on the team alleging money overrode ethics, because, well, I guess it takes one to know one? Throughout the case, we’ve seen a number of own goals from the Musk team. This morning, when the Musk team was requesting to ask questions about safety concerns with AI, YGR snapped, “What else do you think you want to do? Because you do not want to be held in contempt I guarantee you.” She’s tough with lawyers as a general rule, but woof.

“The Netflix Effect.”

Netflix launched a new website in an attempt to highlight the impact of its films and TV shows over the past decade. Some stats shared by the streamer say Netflix contributed $325 billion to the global economy and created over 425,000 jobs for actors, writers, directors, researchers, and VFX artists.

Molo asked Altman if he’d ever fire himself as CEO of the OpenAI for-profit.

“I have no current plans to do so,” Altman replied, adding, “I’ve never thought about it before.”

I’m living for the anti-AI Hacks media tour.

Clips of Hacks creators Lucia Aniello, Jen Statsky, and Paul W. Downs are making the rounds as they promote the (amazing) HBO Max show’s final season. They have a unified message about using AI for creative purposes: “It’s so deeply offensive to me on every level,” says Aniello in an interview at Wired. “The grist and the struggle and the friction, it’s what makes art good,” says Statsky in an On with Kara Swisher appearance.

Google-powered cars will predictively nudge you to switch lanes.

Amidst the biggest update to Android Auto in 10 years, here’s one more feature we spotted on the Android Show: it uses your car’s front camera to predict when to move over. (What would it look for?) Only for select Google Built-in cars, not vanilla Android Auto.

Google’s Guemmy Kim introduced the new features.

A good reason to wait a few weeks to buy a Nintendo Switch 2.

In early June, Nintendo will start selling “Choose Your Game” Switch 2 bundles for $499.99 that include one of three excellent games. You can choose between Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, and Pokémon Pokopia. It’s a savings of up to $29.99 on your first game, and a smart purchase ahead of the console’s planned price increase in September.

Mr. Molo is going directly in at Altman: “Do you always tell the truth?”

“I believe I am an honest and trustworthy businessperson,” Altman says. We are now hearing about Ilya Sutskever’s testimony that he thought Altman was dishonest, and Mira Mirati’s as well. Altman is responding to this with confusion, seems hurt, and is speaking very softly.

Google, please, leave our sassy cat alone.

Google just introduced new 3D emoji which are causing quite a stir in our newsroom. (Early reviews from our staff aren’t great.)

Apple will let developers offer subscriptions with a 12-month commitment.

In theory, this means you could get a subscription with a reduced annual fee but without having to pay for the full subscription in one go. The new type of subscriptions are available on iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, macOS Tahoe 26.4, tvOS 26.4, and visionOS 26.4 or newer, Apple says.

Android is getting better for creators.

Adobe’s updated Premiere video editing app, which launched on iOS last September, will finally arrive on Android “this summer.” It’ll include some Android-exclusive templates and effects designed for YouTube Shorts.

There are also Android-exclusive tools coming to Instagram’s Edits app, including AI upscaling and automatic audio track separation.

Mazda delays its first EV by two years.

That means we won’t get an all-electric Mazda until 2029 at the earliest. The Japanese automaker also plans on slashing its investment in EVs to ¥1.2 trillion ($7.52 billion) through 2030, down from an earlier budget of ¥2.0 trillion ($12.53 billion), the CEO told Automotive News. I guess it could have been worse; Mazda could have gone full Honda and cancelled everything.

Meta’s Connect conference is scheduled for September 23rd and 24th.

Meta says the event will offer “the first glimpse of what’s coming to the next computing platform,” with an “evening keynote” and “developer sessions where we’ll share the latest in VR, wearables, metaverse, and AI.”

At last year’s event, Meta debuted its smart glasses with a display.

“Unlike a lot of other meetings with Mr. Musk, this was a good vibes meeting.”

It was when Altman met with Musk and Zilis to discuss plans for for-profit meetings. Zilis texted after the meeting to say she was glad they had the meeting to let Musk think about “the investment thing so it won’t irk him later.”
A good vibes meeting means a long conversation of Musk”showing us memes on his phone.”

Now into Shivon Zilis. Altman says he retained her on the board to try to keep friendly relations with Musk.

He learned in 2022 that Musk was the father of her kids, and keeping her on the board was “a close call for me personally because she had sort of told us that Mr Musk was playing a more involved role than originally intended and that they were spending more time together.” On the other hand, Altman says he thinks highly of Zilis “and valued her counsel.”

The Meta AI app now has “live AI.”

The feature means you can point your camera at something, ask about it, and get a response in real time. Meta also now lets you “talk naturally” with its Muse Spark model in the app.

A particularly “hair-raising moment” for Altman was a succession plan from Musk.

Altman asked what would happen if Musk died. Musk said, “I haven’t thought about it a ton, but maybe control should pass to my children,” Musk replied. We also see an email where Altman says, “I desperately want to see this work with Elon... but I am worried about control. I don’t think any one person should have control of the world’s first AGI.” He says he’d be open to creative structures - like Musk having control up to a certain milestone.

“I just find AI to be creatively soulless.”

That’s a quote given to Bloomberg by Casey Hudson, who directed Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic at BioWare and is helming a spiritual successor. “It’s hard to imagine where it’s actually helpful in the process. I’m just really unimpressed with it.”

Game developers I spoke with at GDC this year shared similar sentiments.

Microsoft’s Israel chief is leaving amid investigation allegations.

Microsoft quietly announced last week that its Israel general manager, Alon Haimovich, is stepping down at the end of the month after four years. Israeli newspaper Globes now reports that Haimovich is leaving amid a Microsoft investigation into Microsoft Israel’s work with the Israeli Ministry of Defense. Microsoft blocked the Israeli military from some cloud and AI services last year after The Guardian revealed its services were being used for mass surveillance of Palestinians.

We’ve talked about how this case isn’t just for whatever happens in the court...

But also about some light character assassination. It looks like Musk now has a broader strategy to try to make Altman a liability to OpenAI.

Kickstarter clutches its pearls.

Back in 2019 we covered the censorship that was hurting the sex toy industry. One of the offenders was Kickstarter, which later changed its ways and became more welcoming.

But it seems like the company has regressed. “Sexual pleasure” is now a banned concept for rewards, though Kickstarter says pleasure might be fine as long as the product is not designed for “insertion or penetration.” I want to know what’s going on over at Kickstarter HQ but I fear nobody is having fun.
