Google

The name Google is synonymous with online searches, but over the years the company has grown beyond search and now builds multiple consumer products, including software like Gmail, Chrome, Maps, Android, and hardware like the Pixel smartphones, Google Home, and Chromebooks. Its name can also be found on internet services such as Google Fi, Flights, Checkout, and Google Fiber. Here is all of the latest news about one of the most influential tech companies in the world.

Why does the Googlebook exist?

Chromebooks solved a real need 15 years ago. I’m not sure Google’s new Googlebook solves anything.

Qualcomm is getting in on the Googlebook action.

Intel chips won’t be the only CPUs powering Google’s new Android-based laptops. Qualcomm also confirmed on Wednesday that it’s working on Googlebooks, but, like Intel, hasn’t given any details about the specific chips the laptops will feature:

Something special is coming this fall. In partnership with @Google, we’ve created Googlebook, a category of premium, powerful laptops built for intelligent experiences.

Epic and Google will be back in court on July 16th.

We already know what this hearing is about: three weeks ago, Judge Donato told Epic and Google they’d answer six specific pointed questions. The big one: would Google’s “Registered App Stores” really be better at curbing Google’s monopoly? Or should he keep forcing Google to carry rival stores inside its own?

I’ll be there.

Conde Nast calls Google Zero.

Google is sure to tell us that the web is healthier than ever next week at IO, but out here on the streets everyone knows search traffic is collapsing — a phenomenon we’ve been calling Google Zero for years now. Well, here’s Conde Nast CEO Roger Lynch on TBPN saying they are assuming all search traffic will be zero from now on. I’m just saying — give us credit for naming the concept, bro.

Never change, Google.

When it announced the new Googlebook laptops yesterday, a few commenters noticed the name seemed familiar, but only one realized just how familiar.

BlueClouds:

There is Google Play Books (to buy ebooks), Google Books (to search books), and now the Googlebook.

In case you missed it, yesterday’s Android Show stream included a brief list of every phone with current and confirmed plans for AirDrop support in Quick Share. Google also told The Verge that Xiaomi is planning support this year, though we don’t yet know to which phones.

Intel is on board for Googlebook.

It seems that x86 hardware will be part of Google’s new laptop platform, although Intel doesn’t specify what processors it’ll be using:

We’re thrilled to partner with @Google on something we’ve been building with them - Googlebook. Premium, powerful devices designed for Intelligence. We can’t wait to get it into your hands this fall.

Googlebook is also expected to support ARM-based chipsets from other vendors, so perhaps the partnership isn’t exclusive.

Google-powered cars will predictively nudge you to switch lanes.

Amidst the biggest update to Android Auto in 10 years, here’s one more feature we spotted on the Android Show: it uses your car’s front camera to predict when to move over. (What would it look for?) Only for select Google Built-in cars, not vanilla Android Auto.

Google says it has “optimized backend processing” for smart home device controls, alarms, and timers to make Gemini for Home better at the basics. Improved age-gating and content controls mean it should now be able to give you the recipe for a margarita too.

One UI 8.5 is rolling out now.

Samsung’s updated take on Android first appeared on its S26 phones back in February, but it’s taken until now to reach older hardware. Flagship phones and tablets from the last two generations or so are the first eligible for the update, which is rolling out now in Korea, with other countries to follow.

Google teases “Fitbit Air” launch Thursday.

As spotted by 9to5Google, Fitbit posted a few teaser photos on Tuesday with the caption “Buckle up. 5.7.26.” The images don’t give away much, but the zoomed-in shots of a fabric band and metal buckle match earlier glimpses of the rumored screen-free “Fitbit Air.”

Chrome on Android is increasing privacy with approximate location sharing.

For times when you don’t need a website to know exactly where you are (like when checking the weather versus finding the closest ATM) Google is introducing the option to only share your approximate location. It will launch for Chrome on Android first, but expand to the desktop browser in the coming months.

Google’s latest Gemini app redesign is popping up on iPhones.

9to5Google points out this Reddit post from someone seeing the updated design that’s already live on the Gemini macOS app showing up on iOS. It features a gradient color background, a pill-shaped prompt box, and a simplified UI that moves all the extra prompt options, like adding images or switching to Canvas, under a single “+” button.
